Day 12: AirBnb and Gnocchi

Friday 30 June 2017

I was so glad it was Friday and there would be no more class for the weekend. There’s a strange thing that happens when you’re in a foreign place and everything you do feels like vacation and leisure time, I had half forgotten that I was here to go to school. Having class for five days in a row definitely removed the impression of a vacation, but looking forward to the week-end restored that vacation feel. The four of us went to lunch again. This time there was a store front (as opposed to a sit down place) that was called Waffle? They sold waffles with all kinds of fillings. I had a waffle filled with curried chicken, which sounds really weird, but it was really good.
Malory was really worried about her living situation so we then attempted to find a restaurant where we could order coffee to use the Wi-Fi to contact Paula. The second day we were here she told Paula she wanted to be placed with a different family because the lady she was place with has 4 cats, and bad hygiene. She said there’s cat hair in her bedsheets, and the bathroom is very moldy, and the lady hoards and has stacks of stuff everywhere. Three days later and Paula hadn’t gotten back to her on if she had found a new place for Malory to live, so she decided she was going to book an Airbnb for the rest of the month, regardless of what the people who ran the program had to say.
We found a McDonalds with free Wi-Fi, and stayed there until Malory booked an Airbnb. We were all pretty happy that she was doing this, selfishly, especially me, because I don’t live in the center of town, and she said we could stay with her on the weekends, and her place is pretty close to where the LDS Church is. Once she had it booked, the guys went home to get their stuff, and Malory came with me to Montbonnot to get my stuff.
on the left really tiny is the Italian restaurant we ate at
It was overcast and trying to rain but thankfully not pouring. Malory came with me, so that I could come with her to tell her host family she was moving out, and make sure she was safe and didn’t have any problems on the way out. We took a bus to Montbonnot and I hurriedly explained to Helene I was going to stay with Malory for the weekend and packed so quickly because we had to run to catch a bus back to centre ville Grenoble. It turned out we did have to run to catch the bus, but I hadn’t used this stop before to get to the city, I’d always taken a different bus to the Tram, and we didn’t realize there were 2 bus stops, another one just around the corner from us. So, after all that running and getting wet in the trickling rain, we missed the bus because it stopped at the station around the corner. So we ended up having to take the bus I normally take to school, and then the Tram after that, which took like an hour longer, but it was fine because we still arrived at the stop at the time we had planned to meet Eric and Anthony.
We got Malory’s stuff without any problems and met the boys and then made our way to the Airbnb which was right downtown, very near the river Isère. It was a perfect location. We had to wait outside for about an hour for the owner to come and let us in, but his name was Pierre also and he was really nice. The apartment was really nice as well. It was a shoe box, I mean just enough room for a bed, a desk, and a sink and stove and not much else. Thankfully though there were extra pillows and one big blanket, because once we got there I realized the three of us would be sleeping on a tile floor with a thin Ikea rug. The whole apartment actually looked like an Ikea display, which makes sense because there’s an Ikea near the campus.

We were starving once we got her all moved in. Malory and I had missed dinner during the move. The boys had been able to eat with their host families before they met up with us. By this time it was already 11 pm but we went in search of food anyways. We stopped in a few places, but both said their kitchen was closed. We went a little further down the street and found an Italian place that let us in. The chef was sitting at a table playing cards with the other cooks, and he said they would cook for us. The waitress was really cute and nice and she was teaching us French words as we tried to order. I got gnocchi basilique. I’ve never had gnocchi before so I didn’t know what it was supposed to taste like, but I knew gnocchi was made from potato and flour. They were very chewey, and the sauce was like homemade tomato sauce, there wasn’t much basil which was disappointing. Either way, I was starving and happy to be able to get food in my stomach that time of night. Malory ordered the same thing and the guys ordered pizza, which they thought was going to be a personal size pizza, but they turned out to be regular size pizzas.
