Days 15-17: I learn "allume" is French for "lit" & A Prayer Answered

Monday 3 July 2017

Today’s class was kind of a waste of time. It was a 2 hour class where we just did busy work online, conjugating verbs and learning vocabulary. Tomorrow we will be placed in the classes we will keep for the next 4 weeks, so hopefully I will feel like I learned something at that point. The rest of the day was kind of a waste. I left my bag of clothes at Malory’s on Sunday. After class I hung around with her so I could get my stuff when she went home. Instead of going home though, she wanted to go with a big group of people who were trying to track down a tee-shirt shop so they could get shirts that say “allume” French for “lit”. After walking all over the place the tee-shirt shop was finally found, and it was closed. After that she decided to go home, so we walked all over to get back to her place because it was just as far to walk to take the Tram. It’s starting to get hot again too. Anyways, I got my stuff from her house and then went home.
On the bus ride from home to school
Helene was gone to Lyon with Pierre. He is renting his house out to some people this week, and I think Helene said he has a second house in Lyon that he’s staying at. They’re so cute, I’ve never seen people their age date before. She told me at dinner all about how she wanted to find this skirt store with Pierre, but they had gone out of business. Instead they found this great restaurant that only the people of Lyon know about, according to her, and it was better than she expected. So she was happy in that regard. I think she misses Pierre already though.

Had class until 4:30 and then came straight home. In a weird funk, didn’t want to be social at all. Worried about making new friends to do fun things with while here. Worried there won’t be anyone to hang out with that wants to do cultural things instead of beer hopping. Praying to meet new people.

Wednesday 5 July 2017

I was still quiet in class, but despite making no efforts to make friends, I did anyways. There’s a girl, Bianca from Long Beach in our class who I really clicked with today. Also another girl Avery from New Orleans who is really nice, and I got to know Marianne a bit better. She’s a retired lady who’s doing this program for fun. Bianca is worried they put her in too difficult of a class, and Marianne is debating if she should request to be moved up to the next level.
I’m very happy where they put me. I feel like it’s not too hard, but not too easy either. I can understand the professor, I have no problems doing “dictée” which is transcribing a paragraph the Professor reads out loud. I’m a little rusty on my conjugations and tenses, but I think that’s to be expected for not studying French the last 6 months.
The 4 of us had lunch together after class, and then I went to the cultural office to find out where there’s good hiking and how to get to it. The guy told me about Chamrusse which sounds really nice and I thought I’d see if anybody wanted to hike it this weekend, since there is no bus to it after class.
Everybody kind of split up after that, and I decided to just stay on campus and do my homework. I was supposed to hang out with Anthony when he got out of class at 4:30 anyways and it was 3:00 by that time. I finished half my homework and then these two girls I recognized from the Utah students came up to me and asked if I was from Utah too. They said they thought so, and asked if I wanted to go get ice cream with them. It was so out of the blue, but I wasn’t going to say no. They are both about 20, but one has been married for a year and a half. They are both really nice, and right off the bat, they were like, we’re not drinkers, so we don’t hang out with the other guys, plus we live on the outskirts and our last bus leaves at like 8 pm. I thought I was the only one who couldn’t go out at night because of the busses so that was nice to know I’m not the only one.

They also didn’t seem weirded out that I’m in my 30’s and have kids. In fact, Katrina said  she admired me for doing this even though I have kids. I think that’s a compliment. Anyways, we had the whole getting to know you conversation, and they invited me to go to Lyon with them this weekend. Yeah, it didn’t take much thought to say yes. They are also going to Geneva next weekend, and I think I’ll totally go as well. Then I’m hoping we can do one more trip to Marseilles to have time at the beach. I’m just so happy to have found people who are traveling. I was afraid I was going to get stuck in Grenoble every weekend because I didn’t want to do more international travel by myself. I’m so glad I met these girls. So, 2 more days of class, then on to the next adventure.
